Plastering
Tips
|
What is plastering?
Plastering is used on walls and ceilings as
a base to work on. It supplies a textured
base to work on. For example if you intend
papering or painting directly over the top
of plaster, it would need to be very smooth,
if tiling over plaster it needs to be slightly
more rough. A competent builder usually uses
two coats of plaster to build a depth first
is a bonding plaster, which would dry rough,
the second coat will then bond to the rough
coat and give a smooth finish which you can
decorate on top of. You may not need two coats
of plaster if you are plastering onto plaster
board, you will only need the second quote
of plaster to give the smooth finish.
Problems with your plaster?
When removing wallpaper or stripping paint
it can sometimes remove the finish coat of
plaster, so your builder may need to re-plaster
your walls or ceiling. He may or may not have
priced for this eventuality in his quote.
You could check when he is measuring up your
room. Your builder will always advise you
on what he/she feels is best for your individual
needs.
Reasons why your walls or ceilings would need
re-plastering are:
If
your walls are very uneven.
If
your plaster has blown, this is when
your plaster lifts from the wall or
second coat of plaster.
If
your walls are bare brick, for example
new properties or very old properties
may need plastering.

Used to finish the internal walls and ceilings
in most properties. A plastered or boarded
surface can be decorated with paint, paper
or tiles. Whatever you are planning to decorate
with, all defects such as cracks etc, need
to be filled and made good.
If applying plaster to plasterboard you will
only need one coat of finishing plaster. However,
walls (barebrick) or ceilings will need two
coats. First coat is bond (bonding plaster)
or sand and cement render and the second coat
is a skim, using finish plaster allow to decorate
over the top.
Blown
When the plaster, whether all coats or just
one, leaves the surface it will sound hollow
when gently tapped and possibly bulge.
